I know this is very political and off topic for a sewing blog, but this issue is very important and crucial to the very existence of this wonderful past time of blogging.

First my personal experience:
As a blogger, I have had my original content pirated twice by the same little pesky pirate. Using the DMCA notice, I was able to get my content removed. My point is that laws and procedures are already in place to combat piracy and if you take time to use them they work. Supposedly, the broad strokes taken under SOPA and PIPA would do it for me.....but at what cost???? I would rather work a little harder to protect my own original content than give over the control to lawmakers and corporations and sacrafice so much for so called "ease"

Some perspective from my son - a very techie guy:
Guys, These bills, SOPA and PIPA, are BAD. They fundamentally damage the structure of the internet, in ways that will greatly stifle innovation in the US. And they will be completely ineffective against piracy, copyright infringement, or anything else. People who know tech will still be able to get to any content we want, it's just a bit of a nuisance.... The rest of the population will suffer though, due to the lessened availability of knowledge. In addition, the measures in these bills also actively PREVENT new security systems that have been designed over the past several years (DNSSec, a more secure version of DNS, the "phone book" that turns Google.com and Facebook.com into numbers your computer can connect to) from being implemented. This kind of tampering with the "phone book" data was considered so bad that a large group of engineers (including many from the Department of Defense!) have been working for years to prevent malware and malicious hackers from being able to do it, and now we're writing laws to give this exact power to copyright holders? How can this possibly NOT end badly? Please, talk (on the phone or in a paper letter. They ignore email.) to your congress-critter, and make sure they know this is BAD.
So protect our rights to blog and share and interact freely. Make someone else aware of the consequences if these bills come to pass. Sign a petition. Write or call your congressmen.

Just look at all the wonderful detail - lace, tucks, wasp waist, gored linen skirt- all the best details turn of the century fashion had to offer. I am so glad these element are getting a little exposure lately in shows like Downton Abbey and just about any period piece focusing on WW1(the centennial remembrance is fast approaching). I don't know about you, but I am hooked on DA- not just the clothes, the characters, and the settings also. The scenes are so packed full of rich detail, you must watch a second or third time just to catch it all.

I don't usually make New Year's resolutions, but this poster caught my eye on Pinterest.

Sewing Fake Fur

I have seen fake fur used a lot lately in fashion, both as collar accents and shaggy vests with a retro vibe.
This installment to Mom's clipping file detailing fake fur and its sewing techniques is as useful as it is timely.

My take away thoughts from this article:

1) purchase enough fabric to allow for the nap (one way direction) and allowing for cutting each piece one at a time.

2) lay out and cut the pattern on the backing side of the fabric.

3) cut with a single edge razor or a really sharp pair of shears- CUT JUST THROUGH THE BACKING.

4)Take care to reverse the pattern piece orientation while you cut the individual pieces (so you don't end up with 2 right sleeves for example).

5) take care to flip pattern pieces when cutting items on the fold.

6) for tips about marking darts, seam choices, thread selection, presser foot adjustments, stitch length and closure ideas for fake fur garments - click the picture to read the full size version.

I can't just leave well enough alone. My younger son just totally had to have the Genie costume. He was attached to it and would consider no other. This was back at the height of the Aladin popularity. It was real cute with him in it, of course. But the gold, curly toed shoe covers absolutely made the look.

They were easy to make. I just traced the basic shape on to some corrugated cardboard and used his shoes at the time to guide me on the sizing. I laid out two sets of mirror images with a bridge across the tops of the shoes where the laces were. Once cut out, they were taped at the front. Then, of course, lots of gold spray paint. When it was time to wear them, I used lots of tape at the back to hold them together. (If I were doing this again I might use the sticky velcro dots for this part.)

They were short enough to not interfere with his walking and...

I haven't posted a costume in a while. I had so much fun making this rockin' astronaut suit for my younger son back a few years ago. (He just turned 21 this year....ahem.)

A motorcycle helmet and a rigid backpack covered in aluminum foil brought plenty of shine and made a convincing breathing module. The boots were some snow boots already on hand with the perfect glow in the dark detailing. The piece de resistance was the handmade NASA patch created by yours truly. I was so proud of what I could do with a little raised foil and some tulle. It was easily applied to the one piece sleeper with some double stick tape and removable for washing. This provided one great Halloween evening and many hours of pretend afterward.

I don't recall what the foil stuff was, but if there is any interest, I will try to find out its name. I know I got it at the local Michael's at the time. This dates to 1992 or '93.

This Kneeling Apron is the last of the apron patterns from the delighful 1944 USDA Farmers Bulletin that I found in a recent batch of vintage patterns.

"This special apron for the many kneeling jobs around the house serves first by providing a big pocket. Turn this pocket inside out and your clothes and knees are protected from soil, damage and dampness." Make this apron entirely out of plastic or apply a plastic knee shield.

I would take this one step further and add a layer or two of thin foam in the knee shield. Voila! Knee pads that carry themselves around. Great for the garden, scubbing the floor, or even those pesky pushups at work out time.

When the berries are ripe, or your squash crop is about to overtake your house, or even for gathering pecans on an upcoming crisp fall day, this apron is designed for double duty. It can be quickly transformed into a Basket Apron to carry your loot and leave both hands free.

This is another interesting design I rescued from an old Farmers Bulletin from 1944. There were some great ideas for building ease into your house dresses too. Those housewives had it going on. Nothing desperate about it.

The blouse has some nice features too. The sleeves are cut in one with the body. That should go together really quick.

The full box pleated skirt is constructed on a yoke to reduce bulkiness in the waist and hip areas.

Some designer really put alot of thought into the details on this one. That's one of the reasons I love vintage sewing patterns so much.

This is from the same lot of patterns a yesterday's pleated shirtdress. Someone really loved their pleats.

I think the details here are really interesting. The tucks running vertically like princess seams form released pleates for the skirt. The look is very slimming and dramatic.

Notice the yoke and sleeves are cut as one. This should make for a really comfy fit through the arms.

I have a soft spot for that lavender color as well. This would be so versatile for office or dressy occasions.

Full Cover Butcher Apron Tutorial

While sorting a batch of vintage patterns for listing in my shop,

I came upon this nifty little flyer issued in 1944 and reissued in 1952 – The US Department of Agriculture Farmer’s Bulletin No. 1963.

It includes tips for making comfortable easy moving dresses and jackets to wear while working in the home. It also includes several self-drafted aprons whose purpose ranges from useful to just plain cool.

Here is the first of the 3 apron patterns I will be posting here as tutorials.

It is a butcher’s style apron. It is listed as a man’s apron, but notice in the picture, that it is perfectly suited to be drafted as a woman’s apron too.

I have some ideas on how to bring the drafting of this apron into the internet age, but first take a look at the original pattern.

The Butchers Apron is a full coverage apron that can be made in “shower resistant fabric making it ideal for washday or dirty or wet work.” It has an interesting adjustable shoulder strap that keeps it from sliding off your shoulders. It also has a pocket section sewn on that provides you with 3 pockets which may be partitioned as desired – deep pocket potential is huge!

The finished apron appears to be 33 inches wide. (Drafted 18 inches at fold line x 2 excluding the 1/2inch seam and darts.) Here is the layout. Click the picture to view the full version if you wish to have a closer look or make one yourself :

Now for my ideas.

The instructions call for you to draw out a 1 inch grid on newsprint. (I would die trying to do this!) That is so 1940s!

Let’s try a more modern approach. I am thinking of using my quilters cutting mat which already has the grid drawn on, or you may have one of those cardboard folding cutting board that also have a grid in nice bright blue. Use either of those.

Next, go down to the kitchen for some paper- nice view through wax paper. I do hope they never stop making this stuff. It seems so old fashioned, but I use it for everything.* It is nice and strong and see through. And you can make a wider sheet if needed by ironing sections together with a warm iron. Just overlap by about 2-4 inches, sandwich between some old newspaper and press with the iron until the pieces are adhered to each other. **

With this mod, you should be able to draft your pattern in at least 1/3 the time it takes to draw out a grid!

*other great uses for wax paper-
• I wrap my older vintage patterns that have flimsy tattered covers in it. It breathes better that plastic and old patterns need to breathe. Plus I can still see the cover art and read the back if I need to. Tissue paper would breathe, but I couldn’t see all the details.
• Not sewing related, but, several years ago I started wrapping my onions in it before I put them in the vegetable drawer in the fridge. I have thrown away maybe 2 onions in the last 10 years. They sit there happy in their own little microclimate and don’t get shriveled or slimy. Works like a charm.

** I borrowed this genius wax paper pattern tracing idea from Ruth Oberlander’s Sew/Fit Manual, a great textbook on pattern adjustment and fitting. If you don’t own it, you should. You can take just about any pattern and make it fit your personal block with her techniques. I got my copy after hearing about it from another blogger. She bought it, got rid of it and had to buy it AGAIN. It is that useful.
